Radiography" href="/tag/Digital-Radiography.html">Digital Radiography: Bowel cancer has been one of the most common types of cancer in Australia. The disease is responsible for a large radiotherapy_devicenumber of mortalities every year. However, bowel cancer shows high cure rate and overall survival rate once it is diagnosed early. Australia is planning to carry out a bowel cancer screening program in order to help its population in fighting the disease.

A recent research showed that the annual bill Australia pays for treating bowel cancer has been multiplied by four during the last 10 years. Moreover, the bill shows that the country is estimated to pay around one billion dollars next year. The study was carried out by researchers from Royal Melbourne Hospital; it said that the significant rise in bowel cancer treatment bill is due to the increasing number of new cancer cases, in addition to improved survival rates and expensive medications used for treatment.

Dr. Sumitra Ananda, Co-author of the research, said that if the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program was fully operating, a huge number of bowel cancer cases could be diagnosed before they advance and eventually, require high cost treatment. Statistics show that for patients with advanced bowel cancer, survival rates following five year of treatment have been increased from 1% to 16% during the last 20 years. Meanwhile, the cost of bowel cancer treatment has increased to more than 700% in the same period.
