Anonimization removes all information from a diagnostic report or image that could possibly trace it back to the patient.  It is important for clinical trials, research application, and also if the image is sent or stored in a manner that the privacy of the data cannot be guaranteed, e.g. when sending an image over a public network.  This is important to meet HIPAA requirements.
