NAS is the acronym for Network Attached Storage.  This is the archiving technology whereby media is not directly attached.  The NAS and SAN technologies are the most commonly used for long term archiving purposes.

Network Attached Storage (NAS) Servers are a stand-alone solution and attaches directly to a network.  Theservers integrate easily and directly into Microsoft Windows, Novell NetWare, Unix/Linux, and Macintosh networks. 

Multiple NAS servers can be deployed in a single network in cases where extra fault-tolerance and load-balancing is needed.  Additional capacity is added with the new NAS server, and therefore, does not require configuration changes on existing file or application servers.  All security and authentication can be executed through existing servers. 

NAS servers operate access.  Basically, these storage devices hang on a very fast network using a high-speed dedicated communications channel (typically fibre channel) for image transfer.  One can compare this application to the way that multiple computer users can share folders within a workgroup.
