Kaiser Permanente, a leading provider of healthcare services, announced that 9 million of its patients are now having the ability to access their medical information records through a new app. The latter has been designed so that it allows access via mobiles.

According to a new study published in the May issue of Health Affairs, using health information technology (Health IT) can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and produce other important environmental savings. The study, carried out by Kaiser Permanente (Oakland, Calif.), estimates that electronic health records (EHR) could lower carbon dioxide emissions by as much as 1.7 million tons throughout the entire U.S. population.

Skip Kennedy, Kaiser Permanente talked about the top PACS problems. An important issue is what to do if the system goes down. One of the things people focus on is to get a better reliable system, in other words, how to get more "9’s in your uptime (99,999%?). However, each "9" relates to a substantial amount of investment and money. It might be better and more cost effective to come up with alternate workflows, a good test system, work- around, because a system will go down one time or another.

Kaiser Permanente is expressing appreciation to healthcare information technology and healthcare coordination; this comes as result for their help, offered to more than 40%, of very high-risk patients to reach national cholesterol guidelines, an objective that previous studies showed that it was difficult to achieve.

Kaiser Permanente announced today that all medical facilities included in its eight regions is now equipped with Kaiser Permanente HealthConnect, the largest electronic health record in private sector in the world. Kaiser Permanente hospitals in Oakland, Richmond and Vallejo in Northern California were the last facilities to complete the final stage of electronic health record installation. HealthConnect includes documentation, clinical decision support and bar-coding for medication administration.
