May 15 - Cross-enterprise sharing of images and information that is independent of radiology IT solution (RIS/PACS) and enabled by an XDS framework, has now become a reality for hospitals in Northern Ireland. This is the first XDS solution to be deployed and now live in the UK. Accordingly, patient-related radiology data will always be available at the point of care, irrespective of patient location, thus further improving quality of care.
In September 2008, one of the largest RIS/PACS projects in the world started up with the signing of a ten-year contract between the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety in Northern Ireland and Sectra. The project, called the NIPACS Program, successfully delivered a regional RIS/PACS solution to 27 hospitals. Thanks to Sectra XDS technology, regional cooperation has now been extended to include the only two hospitals in Northern Ireland not using Sectra PACS.
"Successfully implementing a complex XDS solution such as this demonstrates our broad knowledge of medical imaging IT – an important quality when extended cooperation and communication are required to achieve healthcare efficiency targets," says Torbjörn Kronander, President of Sectra’s medical operation.
Sectra develops and sells IT systems and services for radiology, women’s health, orthopedics and rheumatology. More than 1,100 hospitals, clinics and imaging centers worldwide use the systems daily, together performing over 55 million radiology examinations annually. This makes Sectra one of the world-leading companies within systems for handling digital radiology images. In Scandinavia, Sectra is the market leader with more than 50% of all film-free installations. Sectra’s systems have been installed in North America, Scandinavia and most major countries in Europe and the Far East.
Sectra was founded in 1978 and has its roots in Linköping University in Sweden. The company’s business operation includes cutting-edge products and services within the niche segments of medical systems and secure communication systems. Sectra has offices in 12 countries and operates through partners worldwide. Sales in the 2010/2011 fiscal year totaled SEK 784 million.
