According to a recent survey published at the Journal of Thoracic Imaging, which is the journal of the Society of Thoracic CT_lungRadiology and the Japanese and Korean Societies of Thoracic Radiology, participants choose advances in CT (computed tomography) which provides high-resolution lung imaging and the new approach used for diagnosis of pulmonary embolism (PE) as the "the most influential" changes in cardiopulmonary imaging through the last 25 years.

This survey took place as a marking of the 25th anniversary of the Journal of Thoracic Imaging. The editors asked 25 international leaders in cardiopulmonary imaging about "What is the most influential article or advance in our specialty in the past 25 years?" Phillip M. Boiselle, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Thoracic Imaging said "High-resolution CT and CT pulmonary angiography were the leading specialty-specific responses," High-resolution CT has become a routine in cardiopulmonary Imaging. This technique offers high-leveled, detailed images of the lungs far more than conventional CT. High-resolution CT was selected as the major significant advance in pulmonary imaging. Theresa McLoud, M.D. a contributor in the survey, said "high-resolution chest CT has permitted a much greater understanding of interstitial lung disease," she added "It has increased the accuracy of diagnosis, and the ability of the radiologist to understand the anatomic distribution of disease at the lobular level, to provide a quantitative analysis of the severity of disease and to assess response to treatment."

The professionals also selected CT pulmonary angiography, which has offered great help in the diagnosis of PE, as the most important recent advance in the field of cardiopulmonary imaging. An older study aimed to compare between spiral CT angiography and conventional angiography for diagnosis of PE, was made back in 1992 by Martine Remy-Jardin, M.D., Ph.D., was chosen as the single most important article during the last 25 years. Lawrence R. Goodman, M.D. said regarding that study "A truly disruptive technique in radiology completely changes the way a disease is diagnosed, he added "This paper totally changed the diagnostic approach to PE and in addition has provided new clinical insights into a perplexing disease."
