Lister Hospital in Stevenage, part of the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, has installed a SOMATOM® Definition Flash and Definition AS+ from Siemens Healthcare with its syngo®.via imaging software for rapid multi-modality clinical image reporting. The Definition AS+ replaces a previous-generation Siemens system, and is being used for a wide range of procedures. These include cardiac, angiography and brain angiography plus both systems are being used for lung biopsies, renal work and stroke services. The hospital has also taken installation of an Artis zee™ Floor-mounted system, suited to angiography and fluoroscopy examinations.

A key reason behind the selection of the CT systems was the array of features including SAFIRE (Sinogram Affirmed Iterative Reconstruction) for low dose imaging using raw data-based iterative reconstruction. The Dual Source CT systems are also equipped with two adaptive dose shields to ensure patients receive the minimum dose possible with the ability to reduce values to one millisievert or less.

The CT systems both offer high image quality with a temporal resolution of up to 150ms (AS+) and 75ms (Flash), combined with extremely fast coverage. The large 78cm bore and table capacity of up to 230kg make examinations easier with the hospital now able to examine patients head first. The hospital is also making use of advanced visualisation software syngo.via, which is helping improve workflow and promote ease of use. In a single click, intuitive post processing amalgamates clinical images for interpretation and automatically processes them according to condition-specific requirements.

“With an increase in demand for CT services, we needed high-end imaging systems that would effectively future-proof the department. The latest installation completes the redevelopment and expansion of the CT service at the Lister Hospital,” said Dr William Topping, Consultant Radiologist at the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust. “Since NICE’s guidance on new generation CT systems, for instance, the Definition Flash and Definition AS+ have helped us accommodate a rise in cardiac examinations from 200 to 650. Having two systems promoting ease of use and excellent image quality has been especially useful for examining patients quickly in trauma or for stroke services.”

“Lister Hospital clearly chose the new imaging systems from Siemens Healthcare with the patient in mind,” said Andreas Hadjiphanis, Regional Sales Manager at Siemens Healthcare. “In addition to its low dose and Dual Source capabilities, the systems feature a range of applications, such as the clinical colonography package, to increase ease of use and patient throughput. It is pleasing to see the CT systems are supporting each other so well and allowing the hospital to conduct a wide range of procedures rapidly and effectively.”
