MIME
MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) is a specification that was originally designed for the exchange of non-ASCII and non-text content using email. MIME is now widely in other applications, especially web browsers. There are many registered MIME content-types (similar to the concept of a file extension, but more rigidly applied), including a subtype for DICOM. Details about the application/dicom content-type can be found in RFC 3240 (included in PS 3.12 of the DICOM standard). The ability to properly identify DICOM objects (such as images encoded as “.DCM” files) using a web protocol is needed to implement WADO.
