DAS

DAS (direct attached storage) describes a storage system where the storage hardware is directly connected or very tightly coupled to the host server using a protocol such as SCSI, ATA, or fiber-channel cable. Contrast with SAN or NAS.

DAS storage such as a DAS RAID can easily be added to increase an existing server's capacity.  Since the additional capacity is being added directly to an existing server, all the normal operating system disk management tools are used to manage the DAS, as the host server sees the DAS RAID as a logical volume.  DAS RAID volumes are controlled by the dedicated RAID controller.
