Royal Cornwall Hospital, part of the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust has taken installation of an advanced multi-axis interventional imaging system, the Artis zeego from Siemens Healthcare. Located in the new state-of-the-art “Donald Gregory” theatre environment, the system is the second of its kind in the UK and is being used for interventional, vascular and CT-guided punctures. Plans for expansion of procedures using the zeego include use in endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR), radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and transjugular intrahepatic porto-systemic shunts (TIPS).

The new theatre was created in order to place endovascular and non-vascular facilities in close proximity for improved efficiency and better patient care. The Artis zeego, situated in the endovascular theatre, has also allowed the interventional radiology department to alleviate pressure from other units and conduct procedures in a fully supported operating theatre. When the theatre is not used for vascular and endovascular procedures, surgeons will eventually make full use of the facility to perform additional vascular surgery.

Based on robotic technology, the Artis zeego provides surgeons and radiographers with flexibility for imaging through its virtually unrestricted access and C-arm positioning. It can be controlled with far greater ease and precision than a conventional C-arm system, providing advanced cross-sectional imaging and full-body coverage. It also features a variable isocentre, which means the working height of the system can be adjusted to reduce fatigue when performing long surgical procedures.

Royal Cornwall Hospital will also be using Siemens’ syngo® DynaCT with the Artis zeego, an application that delivers 3D CT-like cross-sectional images of a specified area directly to the tableside. This provides soft tissue information while performing interventional procedures, assisting with operator confidence for improved patient management and care. The system also features a 56 inch Large Display, reducing the need for magnification, allowing multiple inputs to simultaneously be viewed and controlled directly at the tableside enhancing imaging and workflow within the interventional suite.

“The Artis zeego has supported our drive to work as efficiently as possible, providing us with added flexibility and helping to increase throughput with consistently excellent image quality,” said Simon Finlay, Interventional Radiology Team Leader at the Royal Cornwall Hospital. “Together with the new system, the Donald Gregory theatre provides a clinical environment ideally suited to the needs of radiologists, surgeons, ancillary theatre staff and patients.”

It is also pleasing to see that Royal Cornwall are exploring the full functionality of the system and will be able to expand services in the near future.”
